5 Reasons to Wear Red Lipstick
The perfect shade to take you from the office to the bar, bright red lipstick shows you mean business. A striking lip colour is glamourous, versatile and makes your teeth look whiter – what more could a woman want? Celebs such as Rita Ora, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are big fans of a red lip.
If you love the Marilyn Monroe look but aren’t sure where to start, we teamed up with NYC Upper East Side boutique MADONNA & CO to give you the 5 best reasons to jump on the red lipstick bandwagon.
MADONNA & CO is both a fashion boutique and a beauty bar all under one roof at their Upper East Side Location. An affordable luxury for fashionistas of all ages, offering a variety of products & services from fashion advice, the team are dedicated red lipstick advocates, and so are the gals here at YCB!
1. It suits all skin tones
Lots of women shy away from a bold red lip because they worry the colour might clash with their skin tone, making them look pale or washed out. Bright red lipstick compliments a variety of complexions and works well with both natural and full makeup looks.
2. You can choose your shade
Bright red lipstick isn’t a one-size-fits-all product. ‘Bright red’ may sound like you have the choice of one colour – far from it! From orangey coral reds to deeper crimson reds, you’ll have fun trying out different shades until you find your favourite.
3. It boosts your confidence
There’s nothing better than the feeling of new makeup. Knowing you’ve got a new lipstick to try makes getting up in the morning that little bit easier! When you find the shade that compliments your features perfectly, you’re guaranteed to feel great – and when you feel great, you look great too.
4. Saves valuable time
If you’re not a morning person, you’ll appreciate the struggle of finding time to do your hair and makeup before leaving the house. With bright red lipstick……Read more
HOW RED LIPSTICK HELPS ME DATE BETTER
When I was younger and new to the dating scene, there were many “rules” I tried to adhere to. I’d always try to wear something that showed a little leg (sage advice from my mother). I’d never agree to a date past 9:00 PM (because anything later would be sending the “wrong message”—whatever that was).
And I never wore a red lip. Why? “It’s too high-maintenance,” all my guy friends would tell me. “A woman who wears red lipstick on a first date isn’t a chill woman.”
In my mind, this made sense. No matter what French women try to tell us, red lipstick is inherently finicky. It constantly needs to be touched up. If you eat with it on, it will inevitably end up on your nose or on your chin.
And if you’re lucky enough to wind up in a passionate makeout session with a hot partner of your choice, it will likely wind up smeared all over your face—and theirs. Red lipstick is not chill.
Here’s the issue, though—red lipstick has always been my go-to makeup look. I wear crimson lipsticks with everything from a cat-eye to an otherwise bare face. I’ve always relied on the tube in my makeup bag to cover up a multitude of sins.
No one pays attention to the bags under your eyes when you’ve got a swipe of Tom Ford Matte Velvet Cherry on your lips. (This is a proven fact.) This all also aligns with the fact that no one would ever mistake me for being a chill girl. I’m not a free-spirit, go-with-the-flow kind of woman.
WHY DO WOMEN WEAR RED LIPSTICK?
Red lipstick is saturated with sexual connotations. Hardly surprising, given that its primary function is to make lips look like a female’s privates.
Crude, but apparently true. According to Diane Ackerman, author of A Natural History of the Senses, anthropologists believe that red lips serve as a reminder of the labia, which “flush red and swell when they’re aroused.” (Too much information?)
Ackerman also points out how, in more recent years, lips are almost always decorated in shades of pink or red and then topped off with a finishing layer of gloss “to make them look shiny and moist.” No need to clarify what Ackerman’s getting at there.
In which case, when you apply either red lipstick or lip gloss (and especially if you apply both) what you’re actually subconsciously …..Read more
How to Wear Dark Lipstick During the Day (Without Looking Goth)
When the temperature dips and the leaves begin to change, we beauty junkies switch out our bright lipsticks for darker shades like clockwork. While a romantic berry lip is usually our go-to each fall, tones as dark as black stormed down the Fall 2016 runways, inspiring us (and Taylor Swift) to venture into darker and more extreme beauty territory. Now, before you think the dark lip should be saved for Halloween, hear us out. This week, we asked our Beauty Panel to show us how easy it is to wear a dark lip for daytime.

The key to a dark lip in the daytime is to keep the rest of your face fresh and light. I like to moisturize and prime my skin with a little concealer under the eyes and a light BB cream on my face. For me, contouring and adding a dark lip for the day feels far too dramatic. I like keeping it simple. Add a defined brow, mascara and a light blush and you are set! Since the colour of the lip adds so much to the look, why not keep it the focal point? I love a dark lipstick in a berry tone; it is so flattering on almost all skin types.

Know what to expect from your product
First and foremost, you need to decide exactly what you want to put on your lips. The product that you choose can make just as much of a difference as the color that you pick. If you’re a lippie pro, feel free to skip over this section.
If you are just getting your bearings in the world of lip products, it’s important to know what’s what. It’s not just about different packaging! Each lip product has a different purpose and it’s important to know what you are looking for. Here’s a quick and easy guide:
1. Lip gloss
Lip gloss is great if you are looking for something subtle and moisturizing. It’s terrible if you need something that will stay on your lips for a long time. There are a lot of lip glosses for teens out there, so stick to the adult section if you want a more grown up look. Avoid anything with glitter or ultra-glossy finishes.
Admittedly, lip gloss can be a bit of a pain but it does have its upsides. If you aren’t feeling confident about pulling off a red lip, it’s the perfect place to start. It’ll give you a subtle …..Read more
